Lineage OS 18.1 (Android 11) on a 2014 Samsung S5

Android 11 for the Samsung S5 (SM G900F)

Using a custom ROM from LineageOS, you can install Android 11 on a Samsung Galaxy S5 from 2014! You have to use rotten cryptic tools to install a custom recovery partition on the device before you can install Lineage OS on it. This isn't too difficult provided you aren't afraid of the command line. You install Lineage OS and then Open Google Apps should you want them before rebooting and - voila it works perfectly as far as I can tell - the Android build is up to date and has the latest security fixes in it and none of the Samsung crapware - either the built in obsolescence in these devices is staggering, or the S5 was supremely over specified at the time!

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a discontinued Android-based smartphone with 4G LTE which was launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in 2014 and generally available in April 2014

The Galaxy S5 is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with 2GB RAM and has a removable battery, and a MicroSD card slot. As provided by Samsung it can be updated to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and is full of system apps from Samsung incuding Facebook, which can't be deleted and may have priviliges not available to non system apps.

Once updated to LineageOS 18.1 the device has the latest version of Android, based on the android-11.0.0_r32 tag, which is the Pixel series unified tag. It also now has no Samsung system apps. The warranty is void but then, these devices are seven years old now and very inexpensive second hand starting from just £65 on Amazon UK. Check device compatibility to make sure it is one of the Samsung S5 variants supported by Lineage OS before you start!

TL:DR — It is not too difficult to do, provided you have a computer and the command line skills, and once updated this old device with new software feels snappy and everything just works!
