MS Teams — for Mac computers with Apple silicon

Overview

MS Teams can't really be avoided but has been painful on M1 based Macs.

MS Teams is one of those tools that sometimes, no matter what your preference, you have to use. While there are other great alternatives like Google Meet and other not so great alternatives like Zoom, its just one of those things you can't control as often clients or suppliers or customers will have a preference. Personally, I really need to use tools that are properly built for Mac computers with Apple silicon. 'Just use Rosetta 2' is not a good enough workaround for me. Fortunately for me, then, the build of MS Teams published on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 is a universal binary and on initial inspection and use in a meeting works just fine on my M1 based Mac Studio.

Before you start!

TL:DR — This isnt a finished product. I didn't see anything missing apart from the 'About MS Teams' dialog, but it came direct from GitHub and was built on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 so don't install it if you care about such things.

At last, a build that does not require Rosetta 2

Raw data including links to Ms Teams builds are on GitHub.

There is no licence or other information in front of this link which has the URL for individual builds, so its presumably fine to download from here.

So somewhere between build 22362 and 24351 the dependency was removed. Great news!

Working camera and audio on a Mac computer with Apple silicon

This computer is an Apple Mac Studio (2022), with an Apple Studio display. Everything seems to work perfectly in a test. I set a custom background and I am not in it but I assure you it works fine. Next I tested it in a meeting. Perfect sound and vision and breathtaking quality from the Apple Studio Display!
